Minnesota Clinches Big Ten Victory over Iowa
2/7/2020 7:19:00 PM | Tennis
The University of Minnesota women's tennis team opened up Big Ten play with a win over neighbors from down under, the Iowa Hawkeyes, today at Baseline Tennis Center. This win improves the Gophers record to 5-2.
DOUBLES
It was a close doubles match up between the Gophers and Hawkeyes. In the No. 1 doubles spot, seniors Tiffany Huber and Cammy Frei came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the first match 6-4 over Elise van Huevelen Treadwell and Michelle Bacalla. Following in a similar fashion, Dalila Said and Ekin Ercetin claimed the final win to clinch the point over Iowa. They came back after being down 4-2 to defeat Ashleigh Jacobs and Danielle Bauers.
SINGLES
The courts were in favor of the Maroon and Gold during singles play. The first point of the night would go to River Hart. In a quick battle, she overcame Danielle Bauers 6-3, 6-1. Juliet Zhang would put Minnesota up 3-0 with a win over Danielle Burich 6-1, 6-3. Frei fell in a tight match against Ashliegh Jacobs 6-3, 6-3. As it was time to rally, Dalila Said did just that. In the No. 1 singles spot, Said downed Elise van Huevelen Treadwell 6-3, 6-4. This point won the match for the Gophers.
NOTABLE
With the win over Iowa, the Gophers will head into Sunday's match against Marquette with a four game win streak. Big wins came during doubles play as the duo of Huber/Frei and Said/Ercetin came back from a deficit to earn the doubles point. With the help of Hart, Zhang and Said the Maroon and Gold showed their dominance to clinch a third straight win at home.
QUOTABLE
"It feels great to win at home again," said head coach Catrina Thompson. "I thought the team did a great job today of competing in every spot. We've had some injuries and illnesses we've had to work through, so for everyone to come together it just shows how deep of a team we are."
"I think the whole team played really well," said Dalila Said. "We all came out with great energy and the courts next to me really helped me stay in the match. I was happy to pull out the win."
UP NEXT
Minnesota will be back home at Baseline on Sunday to take on Big East foe Marquette at 11a.m. Be sure to keep up with the Gophers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates on all the action!
