Video Preview: Burns Turn 2/11

The Minnesota men's gymnastics team closes out the first portion of its 2020 schedule this weekend with a tri-meet on the road.

The No. 11 Gophers head to Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday for a match-up against the No. 7 Huskers and No. 13 Army Black Knights. It's Minnesota's first meeting with Army this season, but the second time seeing Big Ten opponent Nebraska. The Gophers and Huskers previously faced off in the season debut Rocky Mountain Open.

It's the last meet of the season that will operate by six up, five count format with the 2020 Winter Cup looming next week. All-arounders Shane Wiskus and Mike Moran will not make the trip as they prepare to head to Vegas, while other Gophers are battling illness.

"It opens up a few lineup spots ... We're going to be a little bit thin in some areas, but we're going to go out there and find a way to feel good and hit your sets," head coach Mike Burns said. "We'll see what happens."

While the meet doesn't count in conference standings for either Nebraska or Minnesota, the Gophers will look to come away with the win to boost their overall record of 9-4 (1-0 Big Ten) before the Big Ten race heats up. The Huskers are currently 4-2 with a 1-1 split in conference competition.

Minnesota has the edge on Nebraska on rings (66.350 average), vault (70.150) parallel bars (67.783) and high bar (66.600). Army has had a solid season as well, and the Black Knights rank above both the Gophers and Huskers on vault with an average of 70.217.

The meet is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday from the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. Fans can watch online via BTN + (subscription required). Live stats will be provided by Nebraska with a link to come before the meet. Updates will also be provided on the Minnesota Men's Gymnastics TwitterFacebook and Instagram pages.

Last Time Out
The Gophers returned to Maturi Pavilion last weekend for their "Flashback Friday" 10.0 meet and finished the night with the win over the Washington Huskies, 287.625-281.475 (398.000-375.550). Freshman Donte McKinney had a standout meet for Minnesota and won each of the titles for all of his three events: pommel horse, vault and high bar. He set new career highs on pommel horse (9.575/13.250) and high bar (9.700/13.800) and the vault win was his second in as many weeks. Fellow freshman Crew Bold took the gold on rings while sophomore Mike Moran did so on floor and senior captain Timmy Kutyla took first on parallel bars.

Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota is currently ranked No. 11 as a team and falls within the top 10 on four events: No. 4 on parallel bars, No. 6 on high bar, No. 8 on rings and No. 10 on pommel horse. Moran is the nation's No. 10 all-arounder and also comes in at No. 9 on floor. Sophomore David Pochinka and Kutyla have maintained their strongholds on parallel bars and high bar, respectively, coming in at No. 4 and No. 6. McKinney falls just outside the top 15 on vault nationally at No. 17, but is No. 4 in conference and No. 1 amongst Big Ten rookies.

The Road Ahead
Minnesota takes some time off of team competition next week as the 2020 Winter Cup is set to take place Feb. 20-22 in Las Vegas, Nev. Wiskus and Moran will represent the Gophers in the competition. It's the first action for Moran as a senior gymnast, while Wiskus, a current US Senior National Team member, will contend to keep his spot with the red, white and blue. The Gophers then head to Ann Arbor on Feb. 29 for a Big Ten dual meet with the Wolverines.
