Meyer Selected to USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Watch List

MINNEAPOLIS – USA Baseball announced its 55-player preseason Golden Spikes Awards watch list on Thursday afternoon, with junior right-handed pitcher Max Meyer making the cut for the second consecutive year. Annually awarded to the top amateur baseball player in the country, the 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 11 in Omaha, Neb.
The preseason watch list features 55 of the nation's top amateur players from both high school and college baseball. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain a rolling list of players, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the season.
For Meyer, the honor comes on the heels of a quintet of preseason All-America awards. The right-hander was previously named a preseason All-American by Baseball America (First Team), D1Baseball (First Team), the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (Third Team), Perfect Game (Second Team) and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (Third Team).
In addition to these awards, Meyer received Preseason Big Ten Pitcher of the Year status from Baseball America, D1Baseball and Perfect Game, while being dubbed the Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Through his first two campaigns in Maroon and Gold, Meyer has earned a surplus of accolades as a result of his performance on the diamond. In 2019, Meyer was a Second Team All-Big Ten Conference selection after finishing the season with a 5-3 record and 2.11 ERA across 76 2/3 innings. Meyer also struck out a team-high 87 batters and slashed .256/.323/.314 at the plate in addition to his work on the mound.
As a freshman, Meyer pitched primarily as a reliever, tying the program record with 16 saves in 2018 en route to a 2.06 ERA and countless All-American accolades. Due to his performance in 2018, the righty was named a Freshman All-American by Perfect Game and the NCBWA, while also receiving Third Team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings.
Heading into the 2020 season, Meyer is now one of the top MLB Draft prospects in the collegiate circuit. The right-hander was ranked as highly as No. 25 overall in draft prospect rankings by MLB Pipeline.
As the clear-cut ace on a stacked Gopher pitching staff, Meyer will look to lead a powerful group of arms that is already rewriting the record books at Minnesota. Just last season, Gopher hurlers combined to strikeout a ridiculous 536 batters, the highest total across the program's 131 season history.
Meyer and the Gophers officially embark on their 2020 season tomorrow evening when they open the Angels College Classic against Oregon in Tempe, Ariz.
