Gophers Kick Off Weekend Slate

Minnesota competed at the Iowa State Classic, the Tyson Invitational, and the St. Thomas Showcase on Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field team kicked off a busy weekend of action by competing at the Iowa State Classic, the Tyson Invitational, and the St. Thomas Showcase on Friday.
Iowa State Classic Highlights
On day one at the Iowa State Classic, Bethany Hasz led the way with a win in the women's 3,000 meters, clocking a time of 9:13.46 -- just shy of her Gophers' program record time of 9:11.46 set last season. In the field events, Hannah Arason led the Gopher women with a third-place showing in high jump where she tied her indoor PR with a mark of 1.75 meters (5-08.75 ft.).
Alec Basten nearly matched his personal record in his first 5,000 meters race of the season, clocking a 13:59.10 to finish 10th in the invitational competition. Basten already ranks fourth in program history after running 13:55.19 last year. Jack Manderscheid and Evan Ferlic added 5,000 meter personal records in the open competition behind a pair of top-10 finishes as Manderscheid came in ninth at 14:13.08 and Ferlic came in 10th at 14:13.18.
Josh Tracy added a fifth-place finish in the men's 600 yards at 1:11.87.
The Gophers also carried a trio of top-10 finishers in the men's pole vault as Mike Herauf finished eight, Teddy Frid finished ninth and Ekhardt Van der Watt came in 10th.
Tyson Invitational Highlights
On the women's side, Amira Young ran a career-best time of 7.29 seconds in the 60-meter dash to finish third at the meet and move even closer to Minnesota's program record in the event. Young ranks second among all-time Gophers in the 60 meters, trailing only Tahesia Harrigan, who set the program-record at 7.22 seconds in 2002. Octavia Cato also moved up Minnesota's all-time list in the event with a season-best time of 7.45 seconds to tie for fifth in program history.
In the field events, Hannah Morris used an indoor career-best mark of 6.08 meters (19-11.50 ft.) to finish fourth in women's long jump and move into a tie for fourth among all-time Gophers as well.
Mason Roomes and Erik Eckleben posted top-10 finishes in the men's long jump invitational competition with Roomes coming in eighth at 7.43 meters (24-04.50 ft.) and Eckleben finishing 10th at 7.13 meters (23-04.75 ft.).
Elliott Davis added his fastest 400 meters of the season for the Maroon & Gold at 47.91, finishing 11th.
St. Thomas Showcase Highlights
The Gophers also competed locally at the St. Thomas Showcase where five Gophers won event titles: Carissa Dock (women's mile), Shay Nielsen (women's shot put), and Devia Brown (women's weight throw), Nate Hoglund (men's 60 meters) and Kostas Zaltos (men's weight throw, unattached)
