Gophers Win 16 Titles at Home

Minnesota wrapped up its indoor home slate by hosting the Minnesota Cold Classic on Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track & field program wrapped up its indoor home slate by hosting the Minnesota Cold Classic on Friday. The Golden Gophers combined for 16 titles behind eight event wins on the men's side and eight on the women's side.
Men's Highlights
The Minnesota men were led by a pair of weight throw performances that rank among the top-three all-time showings at the University of Minnesota and two of the top throws in the NCAA this year.
Kieran McKeag led the way with a win at 22.93 meters (75-02.75 ft.) as the redshirt junior posted a personal record and recorded the third best throw in the NCAA this year and the best performance by a Big Ten competitor. McKeag remains second all-time at Minnesota in the discipline. Kaleb Siekmeier joined his teammate in the national top-10 as the runner-up at 22.09 meters (72-05.75 ft.) – leaping up to third all-time for the Gophers in addition to posting the eighth-best throw in the NCAA this year. Jon Nerdal finished third in the competition for Minnesota while Kostas Zaltos came in fourth as an unattached competitor.
Additionally, Noah Cvetnic earned his first career title with the Maroon & Gold after pacing the men's high jump competition at 2.01 meters (6-07.00 ft.) while Mike Herauf picked up his third win of the season in the men's pole vault at 5.11 meters (16-09.25 ft.).
On the track, the Gophers were led by a win in the 60-meter dash from Kion Benjamin, who posted the 10th-fastest time in University of Minnesota history in the event at 6.80. Meanwhile, Nick Rink led a slew of Gophers in the front of the pack in the men's mile with his win at 4:09.94 while Khalid Hussein was the runner-up at 4:13.89, Hunter Staack came in third at 4:15.33, Connor Olson finished fourth at 4:15.65 and Eli Hoeft was fifth at 4:16.38 as an unattached competitor.
The Maroon & Gold also picked up victories in the men's mile from Hunter Lucas in 1:55.86 and a 1-2 finish in the men's 600 meters with Collin Sieffert clocking a winning time of 1:21.18 and Grant Fuller coming in just behind him at 1:21.89.
Marquez Clerveaux added win in the men's 200 meters at 22.10 as an unattached competitor.
Women's Highlights
The Gopher women took home four titles in the field events and four wins on the track in the team's final home meet of the indoor season. Nayoka Clunis swept the throwing events to lead the women's squad at the Minnesota Cold Classic, winning shot put with a mark of 16.49 meters (54-01.25 ft.) and leading the way in weight throw with a throw of 20.91 meters (68-07.25 ft.).
Lexi Kiefer and Ashley Ramacher also won titles in the field events. Kiefer cleared a season-best 3.92 meters (12-10.25) for her first pole vault crown of the year while Ramacher picked up her third high jump title of 2020.
On the track, Akilah Lewis ran a time of 7.59 seconds to take home top honors in the women's 60 meter dash while Lauren Hansen used a career-best time of 24.83 seconds to win the 200 meters. Likewise, Maria Eastman won the mile with a PR of 4:57.00 as the Gophers took the top 10 places in the event. Sydney Kretlow rounded out the team's titles on the track with a win in the 800 meters while competing unattached.
Other highlights on the track saw Julia Hayes clock another career-best time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing as runner-up in 8.83 seconds. She added a PR in the 200 meters as well.
Along with the eight event wins, the Gophers posted eight runner-up finishes at the meet: Hayes (60 meter hurdles), Molly Reeves (400 meters), Erin Huls (600 meters), Jaycie Thomsen (mile), Sarah Werking (3,000 meters), Tess Keyzers (weight throw), Devia Brown (shot put), and the 4x400-meter relay team of Reeves, Meleah Biermaier, Nicole Buchinger, and Natalie Windels.

The Maroon & Gold continue the indoor campaign next weekend at the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships (Feb. 28-29) at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Minnesota's men's distance medley relay squad will also compete on Saturday at Notre Dame.
