Gophers Earn Two Top-Three B1G Team Finishes

The Minnesota women finished second and the Gopher men came in third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
GENEVA, Ohio -- The University of Minnesota track & field program earned a pair of top-three team finishes as the Gopher women finished as team runner-up and the Gopher men came in third overall at the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday.
The women recorded 99 points, trailing B1G champion Ohio State by just five points. On the men's side, Indiana took home the team title with 120.5 points, followed by runner-up Iowa (107 points) and Minnesota (88.5 points). In total, the Gophers finished the meet with eight All-Big Ten award recipients led by All-Big Ten First Team honoree and men's triple jump champion Sammie Houston.
Women's Day Two Highlights
Val Larson was the Minnesota women's top finisher on day two of the B1G Championships as she repeated as B1G runner-up in the 600 meters, clocking a career-best time of 1:28.93 to improve her time at fourth in Minnesota history.
Amira Young and Octavia Cato were also among the Gophers' top performers on Saturday, finishing third and fourth in the 60 meters as Young clocked a third-place time of 7.37 seconds while Cato came in fourth in a career-best 7.38 seconds, moving her into third in Minnesota history in the event and securing a total of 11 points for the Gophers in the event. Young also finished fourth in the 200-meter final, matching her Gophers' program record time of 23.64 seconds.
Janielle Josephs also earned bronze for the Maroon & Gold in her B1G debut, finishing third in the 400 meters in a career-best time of 53.81 seconds -- good for third in Gophers' history as well.
The Gophers put two in the top five of the mile as Bethany Hasz took third in 4:44.09 and Abby Kohut-Jackson was fifth in 4:45.29. Hasz also finished seventh in the 5,000 meters, totaling 16 points for Minnesota with a runner-up finish in the 3,000 meters on day one as well.
Rachel Schow clocked a career-best time of 8.30 seconds to finish fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. She moved into sole possession of third among all-time Gophers in the event. Schow also joined Larson, Jayla Campbell, and Josephs to make up Minnesota's sixth-place 4x400-meter relay team, which clocked a season-best time of 3:39.93 to rank 10th in Gophers' history.
In the day two field events, Lorean Murray matched her best B1G finish of her career with a fourth-place finish in triple jump for the women. In addition, a day after finishing as B1G runner-up in weight throw, Nayoka Clunis picked up four more points in the team standings with a fifth-place finish in shot put with a mark of 16.81 meters (55-02.00 ft.). Tess Keyzers also scored points in both throwing events, finishing seventh in shot put with a throw of 16.22 meters (53-02.75) after coming in sixth in weight throw.

Men's Day Two Highlights
Sammie Houston had been climbing the University of Minnesota all-time top-10 list in the men's triple jump all season long and on Saturday the redshirt senior finally reached the summit with a school record and the Gophers' first Big Ten indoor title in the discipline in 24 years.
Houston cleared a personal record of 16.18 meters (53-01.00 ft.) on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute, breaking Keita Cline's school record of 16.16 meters (53-00.25 ft.) from 1995. Houston's performance, which also currently as the best jump by a Big Ten competitor this year and the eighth-best jump in the nation, is Minnesota's first Big Ten championship in the men's triple jump since Adrian Ellis in 1996.
The Maroon & Gold also added two more Second Team All-Big Ten performances on Saturday as Michael Burke was the runner-up in the men's high jump and Dawson LaRance finished second in the men's 800 meters. Making his Big Ten meet debut with the Gophers, Burke cleared 2.23 meters (7-03.75 ft.) – to jump up to third all-time at the University of Minnesota in the high jump. LaRance, meanwhile, clocked a 1:49.05 to move up to eighth in the Gophers' history books in the 800 meters. Shane Streich added a fifth-place finish in the event with his own personal record of 1:49.50 – remaining 10th in the record book for the Maroon & Gold.
Additionally, Minnesota's 4x400 meter relay team of Elliott Davis, Jackson Wellenstein, Jonathan Webb and Ben Psicihulis picked up a third-place finish with a time of 3:07.16 – Minnesota's fastest time of the year. Davis also added a fifth-place finish individually in the men's 400 meters at 46.83 – moving the senior up to seventh in program history.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Tharaldsen finished fifth in the men's shot put at 18.89 meters (61-11.75 ft.).
The Gophers scored a pair of runners in the men's 600 finals as Luke Trapp finished seventh at 1:19.66 and Josh Tracy came in eighth at 1:20.23. Owen Hoeft tied for seventh in the men's mile at 4:11.45 while Kion Benjamin came in eighth in the men's 60-meter dash at 6.81.
