Wiskus, Moran Gear Up for Winter Cup

Shane Wiskus and Mike Moran trade in the freezing February temps for the sunny west this weekend as the duo heads to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the 2020 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup Challenge.

The Winter Cup is an annual meet that features some of the nation's best collegiate and senior gymnasts. It is Wiskus's third Winter Cup in his tenure at Minnesota and Moran's first as a senior.

The meet takes place over two nights: Thursday's preliminary at 8:30 p.m. CST and finals at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The top 28 senior performers based on the 10-point system on Thursday will advance to the final day of competition. A range of 1 to 11 points are awarded to athletes who finish in the top 10 on any given event.

Wiskus will contend to keep his place on the U.S. Senior National Team during the event. The top six all-arounders from Thursday will automatically receive a spot, with six other team members being named after the finals session. Gymnasts named to the team will keep their status through the U.S. Championships in June.

Shane, a junior and captain for the Gophers, was a member of the 2019 World Championships team that competed in Stuttgart, Germany last October and came in fourth place. He was the youngest of the six-man squad and the only active college gymnast.

Moran, a sophomore at Minnesota, is currently ranked No. 11 all-around in the NCAA with an average score of 77.417. He is also ranked No. 9 on floor with an average of 14.233.

Both sessions of the competition will be streamed live on the USA Gymnastics YouTube channel and MyUSAGym will provide live stats. Updates will also be provided via Minnesota Men's Gymnastics TwitterFacebook and Instagram pages.
