Minnesota Skates to 3-3 Tie with PSU, Falls in 3-on-3 OT
2/21/2020 11:28:00 PM | Men's Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – For one night at least, the Gopher Hockey program sits a point behind Penn State in the Big Ten standings after the Nittany Lions picked up the conference bonus point in 3-on-3 overtime on Friday night following a 3-3 overtime tie.
Tyler Nanne led Minnesota (14-11-6 overall, 9-6-6-4 Big Ten) with a goal and an assist while a total of seven Maroon & Gold skaters tallied points in the tie.
On the other end of the ice, Jack LaFontaine made a season-high 54 saves in net for the Maroon & Gold as the junior put up his highest save total with the Gophers. Stats from the 3-on-3 overtime session, where LaFontaine added another three saves, do not count towards season totals.
The Gophers rallied from one-goal deficits twice on Friday night with Nanne tallying his fourth goal of the year in the second period to bring Minnesota even at 1-1 while Ben Meyers buried his eighth goal of the year to make it 2-2 in the third period. After Bryce Brodzinski gave the Gophers their first lead of the night, Penn State (19-10-4, 11-8-3-1) found an equalizer of its own.
After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime, Alex Limoges locked up the Big Ten bonus point for the Nittany Lions, scoring at 4:36 of the 3-on-3 overtime session.
Notable
Neither team took a penalty in the series opener as both teams went the full 65 minutes of official play plus the 4:36 of 3-on-3 play without committing an infraction…Nanne matched his single-season career high with his 13th point of the season.
