Wiskus Earns Silver, Moran Places Top 20 at Winter Cup

Shane Wiskus and Mike Moran wrapped up the 2020 Winter Cup Challenge on Saturday and both came away with top performances. Day two of competition was the event finals portion, in which two-day scores for each event were combined for a final total. 

Wiskus was named the all-around silver medalist after his outstanding showing on Thursday with a score of 84.550. He competed in three of six events of the finals session to bring his two-day total to 125.550. 

The junior captain scored within the top 20 on all but one event and was in the top 10 for three. His one podium finish of the meet came on vault, where he scored a combined total of 28.750 to tie for silver.

Wiskus had already secured a spot on the U.S. Senior National Team after his top-six performance in Thursday's session. 

First-timer Mike Moran competed in four events during Saturday's final and fell within the top 25 in all of them. The sophomore compiled a two-day total all-around score of 128.250 to come in 17th. 

The highlight of his day came in his seventh place finish on floor, where he scored a two-day total of 28.050.

The Gophers rotated in Olympic order for the finals session and began on floor. Wiskus recorded 13.750 for a two-day final score of 27.950 on the event and eighth place. He scratched pommel horse and rings, but made the most of his fourth rotation, vault. Wiskus was the leader on the event following day one and did not slow down. He added a 14.300 for a total of 28.750 and tied for second place. Wiskus would not take the competition floor again until high bar, where he scored 12.950 to bring his total to 26.600 for seventh place to finish the day.

Mike Moran
Moran, Minnesota's top floor worker this season, improved upon his day one performance with a score of 14.100 for a two-day total of 28.050, good for seventh place. He then moved to pommel horse and scored 11.500 for a final mark of 24.250 (25th). Moran scratched rings and scored a 12.750 on vault for a combined 26.850, which earned him 18th place. He also took 18th on parallel bars, where he scored 11.950 Saturday for a total of 24.400. Moran scratched the final rotation of the day, high bar.
