Maroon & Gold Unable to Take Rubber Match Against TCU

2/24/2020 6:40:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – With the series tied at one game apiece heading into Monday, the Gopher Baseball team was unable to secure a series victory as they dropped the rubber match to TCU, 11-2.

Fresh off a game in which Minnesota bats came alive to outscore TCU, 7-6, the offense fell silent in game three. The Maroon and Gold's lone runs came via solo homers from Easton Bertrand and Jordan Kozicky in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Bertrand's long ball marked his second in as many days, with the junior launching a two-strike offering into the left field bleachers on the heels of a three-hit, one homer performance on Sunday. Kozicky's first homer of the 2020 campaign also left the yard to left field, raising the senior's career total to 21 big flies.

Minnesota starter Patrick Fredrickson kept the TCU offense in check in the first inning before running into trouble thereafter. The Horned Frogs scored two runs in the second before chasing Fredrickson in the third en route to a three-run frame, bringing the score to 5-0.

Although the aforementioned pair of Minnesota homers would bring the score to 5-2 through five innings, that would be the closest the Gophers would come on Monday's midday game.

Gopher relievers did not fare much better than their starter, as the team of Drake Davis, Ryan Duffy and Sam Ireland were roughed up for a combined eight earned runs over 5 2/3 innings of work. Will Anderson would provide the only scoreless outing for the U on the day, tossing 1 1/3 no-hit innings at the tail-end of the contest.

Fredrickson was saddled with the loss for Minnesota, pitching two innings with three earned runs, two hits, five walks and two strikeouts. TCU starter Russell Smith earned the win via five innings of two-run ball to go with four hits and five strikeouts.

Quotable
"Our level of play is not going to improve in all phases of the game until we can throw more strikes and get on and off the field more quickly and change the pace of the game," said head coach John Anderson. "We've seen this before some years at the beginning of the year. Hopefully, we can correct the trend. We're going to try to get to the bottom of it and figure it out."

Notable
After failing to homer in each of the season's first five games, Minnesota has now registered multi-home run performances in two straight contests. In his first two starts of the year, Bertrand homered in both games while combining for four hits in the process.

Up Next
