Gophers Advance to WCHA Final Faceoff

Minnesota used a 7-3 win over St. Cloud State to win its WCHA First Round series.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The line of Sarah Potomak, Grace Zumwinkle, and Taylor Heise combined for 10 points to lead the No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team to a 7-3 victory and WCHA First Round series sweep over St. Cloud State at Ridder Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota (27-5-3) was led by S. Potmak's four-point effort (1g-3a) and a hat trick from Zumwinkle. Heise (3a), Amy Potomak (1g-1a), and Emily Oden (2a) all had multiple points in the win for the Maroon & Gold as well. Sydney Scobee earned the win in net with 11 saves.
The Gophers put up more than 50 shots on goal for the second-straight game, finishing with a 54-14 advantage in shots on goal. St. Cloud State (6-25-4) was led by a 47-save effort from Emma Polusny along with multiple points from Klara Hymlarova (1g-1a) and Abby Thiessen (2a). The Huskies also received goals from Emma Bigham and Taylor Lind.

"Solid effort here tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "It's never easy to end a team's season. We knew that St. Cloud would make a good push. It was a really good job from our team in possessing the puck and we had some good looks and second-chance shots. It was a fun weekend for us. We're looking forward to this weekend—we know we have our hands full the rest of the way, but it's a great challenge and we're looking forward to that."

Minnesota jumped to an early lead for the second-straight game, scoring twice in the opening minute after getting on the board at the 24-second mark in game one of this weekend's series. On Saturday, Patti Marshall gave the Gophers the lead just 30 seconds in before Zumwinkle scored her first of three goals just 29 seconds later. Despite it being a high-scoring game, Minnesota never trailed on the way to the 7-3 victory.
