Minnesota Wins Over Washington

2/7/2020 11:34:00 PM | Men's Gymnastics

The No. 10 University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team hosted its "Flashback Friday" meet and came away with the win over the No. 17 Washington Huskies, 287.625-281.475.

Maturi Pavilion saw its first men's meet running in the 10.0 scoring format for the first time in over 10 years, with scores flashed converted for fans in the arena.

While live statistics were still in the standard FIG system, the conversion provided a closer outcome and tighter scores. With business as usual, the Gophers won 398.000-375.550.

Minnesota swept the event titles on the night and finished with all but two of the 18 top-three places.

Notable
Freshman Donte McKinney had another solid outing for the Gophers and finished with a whopping three event titles on the night, on pommel horse (9.575/13.250), vault (9.875/14.500) and high bar (9.700/13.800). His marks on pommel horse and high bar are new career highs. He won the Cooke Award, an MVP honor for each home meet, for his performance and nabbed his second vault title in as many weeks.

Quotable
"It was a good competition, a lot of energy in the Pavilion, this is a great place to compete. The people that come to watch, they get a treat, and they got a double treat tonight with the 10.0 format," head coach Mike Burns said. "For me, it was kind of fun because I competed under the 10.0. Once you start to get into the 9.8s, that got pretty exciting, because you think, 'Maybe some of these guys can pop out a 10.' Didn't happen tonight, but it's a hard thing to do. It should be a hard thing to do and we're just not there yet."

Floor
The Gophers posted a 47.975 (66.700) on floor and sophomores swept all top three spots. Mike Moran won the title with a score of 9.700 (13.750). Garrett Kasiski posted a 9.625 (13.450) for second place and Tyler Davis scored a career-high mark of 9.550 (13.150) for third, his first-ever podium finish.

Pommel Horse
McKinney earned his first title of the night on pommel horse with a 9.575 (13.250). Junior Russell Johnson took third with a 9.550 (12.950) and sophomore David Pochinka took fourth with a score of 9.475 (12.850).

Rings
Bold took home a first place finish on rings with a career-high score of 9.625 (13.400). Kasiski also earned a spot on the podium with a third place finish on the event with a 9.550 (13.150).  Sophomore Danny Yoon finished in fourth place with a 9.500 (12.950).

Vault
The Gophers swept the podium on vault with all three athletes scoring a 14.000 higher. McKinney took the title with a 9.875 (14.500), with Bold finishing right behind him with a career-best 9.800 (14.150). Moran earned his second podium finish of the night and came in third on the event with a 9.775 (14.100).

Parallel Bars
The home team again took the top three spots, this time on parallel bars. Senior captain Timmy Kutyla claimed his first title on the event in his career with a score of 9.650 (13.600). Pochinka placed second (9.575/13.250) and Bold came in third (9.550/13.200).

High Bar
Minnesota posted its second-best high bar score of the season 48.025 (66.950), led by McKinney, with the first title on the event in his career. The Gophers went 1-2-3 on high bar, with Kutyla finishing just behind McKinney, also with a 9.7 (13.750). Bold and Pochinka split third place with a score of 9.650 (13.550).
