Meet Preview: Gophers Take on Wolverines in Undefeated Battle

The No. 10 Minnesota men's gymnastics team is back in action this week and faces a big match-up against the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.
The meet is the second in the Gophers' Big Ten regular season slate. Both Minnesota and Michigan are currently defenders of the inaugural 2019 Big Ten regular season title and are both currently undefeated in conference.
"Some would call it a Battle Royale, I believe," head coach Mike Burns said. "We're bringing in what I feel is a very legitimate team to give the Wolverines a run for their money ... I think we have a great shot to go there and show what we're capable."
As the season winds down, Minnesota only has three regular season meets remaining, all of which count in the Big Ten standings. With the conclusion of the Winter Cup Challenge, teams also move to five up, five count lineups.
"We kind of get into this routine now where it's weekend in, weekend out, every routine matters and every set matters," sophomore Mike Moran said. "Five up just kind of puts that pressure on it. And I think as much as that makes it harder, I also think that's where a lot of teams, especially us, shine."
This weekend's meet is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. CST, with live stats provided by Michigan. Fans can also follow along with meet updates via the Minnesota men's gymnastics Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages.
Last Time Out
While the team had a week off, Moran and junior captain Shane Wiskus represented Minnesota at the 2020 Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas last weekend. Wiskus placed second all-around and on vault, and kept his spot on the U.S. Senior National Team. He was also named Big Ten and CGA Gymnast of the Week for his efforts. Moran, a first-timer at the Winter Cup, ended up placing 17th all-around and seventh on floor, in which he's currently ranked No. 8 in the NCAA. Prior to Winter Cup, the Gophers took on Nebraska and Army in Lincoln and earned their season high score of 404.700 to place second.
Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota is currently ranked No. 10 as a team and comes in the top 10 on four events: No. 3 on high bar, No. 4 on parallel bars, No. 7 on rings and No. 9 on pommel horse. Wiskus slid back into his No. 1 ranking all-around after Winter Cup with an average of 84.233. He also takes the top rank on p-bars and is No. 9 on floor and rings. Moran is the nation's No. 15 all-arounder and No. 8 on floor. The Gophers have three gymnasts ranked in the top 15 on high bar: senior captain Timmy Kutyla at No. 5, freshman Donte McKinney at No. 10 and sophomore David Pochinka at No. 12. Pochinka also comes in at No. 6 on parallel bars and McKinney is No. 15 on vault.
The Road Ahead
The Gophers have a bye next weekend before returning to Maturi Pavilion for the last home meet of the regular season on March 13, when Minnesota faces off against Ohio State and Nebraska. The meet is set for 7 p.m. and will be Senior Night for Minnesota's lone senior and captain Timmy Kutyla. It will also be High School and Club Night at the Pav, with more details coming soon. Tickets for the meet are now available through Gopher Sports.
