Gophers Win Three to Open Meyo Invite

Amira Young, Nayoka Clunis and Mike Herauf won events to lead the Maroon & Gold on day one at the Meyo Invitational on Friday.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Amira Young, Nayoka Clunis and Mike Herauf won events to lead the Maroon & Gold on day one at the Meyo Invitational on Friday.

Women's Highlights
Young broke her own Minnesota program record with a winning time of 23.72 seconds in the 200 meters while Clunis won women's weight throw with a career-best mark of 22.20 meters (72-03 ft.), moving into second among all-time Gophers. Clunis also set a new facility record at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center. 

The Gopher women picked up a pair of runner-up finishes on the track on day one at the Meyo Invitational as well. Val Larson posted a season-best time of 1:30.07 to finish second in the 600 meters, and the distance medley relay team of Anastasia Korzenowski, Lauren Hansen, Sophie Schmitz, and Bethany Hasz clocked a time of 11:24.66 for runner-up honors. 

Young, Lexi Romero, and Octavia Cato all advanced to Saturday's heats of the 60-meter dash while Rachel Schow moved on in the 60-meter hurdles as well.

Men's Highlights
Mike Herauf picked up his second win of the season for the Gophers in the men's pole vault on Friday night with a winning performance of 5.15 meters (16-10.75 ft.). Minnesota added a third-place finish in the event from John Uchytil at 5.00 meters (16-05.75 ft.). 

The Maroon & Gold men added a pair of runner-up finishes on the opening day of competition in South Bend with both showings standing among the top-10 performances in program history. 

Jon Nerdal led a group of four Gophers in the top 10 of the men's weight throw with his personal record of 21.72 meters (71-03.25 ft.) -- a mark that now ranks fourth all-time at the University of Minnesota and stands as the best throw of the season for Minnesota. Kaleb Siekmeier finished fourth at 20.64 meters (67-08.75 ft.) while Kieran McKeag came in ninth and Connor Rousemiller finished 10th. 

Speaking of the fourth best performance in program history, Sammie Houston jumped into a tie for fourth all-time at Minnesota in the men's triple jump as he cleared 15.62 meters (51-03.00 ft.) to tie Derek Gearman (2007). Houston finished as the runner-up in the event for the Maroon & Gold. 

Additionally, the Gophers had three of the top-eight finishers in the men's 600 meters with Ben Psicihulis nearly matching his personal record at 1:17.63 to finish fourth while Josh Tracy finished sixth at 1:18.50 and Lucas Trapp came in eighth at 1:18.62. Meanwhile, Kion Benjamin pushed himself through the 60-meter preliminaries at 6.88.
