Woken Leads Gophers Past Beavers

Alex Woken scored two goals to lead Minnesota to a 4-1 win over Bemidji State.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Alex Woken scored two goals and Emily Oden logged three points as the No. 4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team opened this weekend's WCHA series with a 4-1 win over Bemidji State on the road at the Sanford Center on Friday night.
Minnesota (22-5-3, 14-5-2-1 WCHA) led 1-0 after two periods of play before the teams combined for four goals over the final 20 minutes. The Gophers extended their lead to two on Woken's second goal of the game, but Bemidji State (14-14-3, 8-11-2-0 WCHA) answered with a tally from Lydia Passolt. However, Madeline Wethington and Oden sealed the win for the Maroon & Gold with goals in the game's final eight minutes.
Along with multi-point efforts from Woken (2g) and Oden (1g-2a), Grace Zumwinkle and Sarah Potomak each recorded two assists. Sydney Scobee made 15 saves for the Gophers while the Beavers received 34 saves from goaltender Lauren Bench. Minnesota had a 38-16 advantage in shots on goal.

"A solid win here tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "We managed the puck exceptionally well and got great goaltending from Scobee. Even though it was 1-0 going into the third, our team did a really nice job of extending that lead and continuing to play well defensively."
Notable
With two points against the Beavers, S. Potomak now ranks 11th in Gophers' history with 168 career points (61g-107a). She is chasing 10th-ranked Kelly Pannek (72g-114a), who wrapped up her career last season with 186 career points.
