Gophers Top South Alabama, Fall to Missouri in Extras
2/8/2020 7:10:00 PM | Softball
• The Gophers went 1-1 on the afternoon with an extra innings loss to Missouri, 7-4 in the eighth, and a 10-0 victory over South Alabama.
• Buffalo, Minn. Native Emily Hansen combined for five hits and six RBIs on the day including a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh against Missouri to send the game to extra innings.
• The Gophers scored eight runs in the seventh against South Alabama to pull away with the victory. They move to 3-1 on the season.
Game One: Missouri 7, Minnesota 4
The Gophers found themselves in an early 3-0 hole after the top of the first inning against a tough Missouri squad that is receiving votes in both major NCAA softball polls.
MaKenna Partain helped the Gophers cut into that lead with a triple down the right field line to score two in the second inning.
Both teams made early pitching changes that paid off. Missouri went to the bullpen in the third inning while the Gophers turned to Amber Fiser in the fourth. Both new pitchers kept the opposing team off the board until the seventh inning.
Missouri launched a solo home run in the top of the seventh to move their lead to two. Hansen knotted things back up with a clutch single into right to score Partain and Carlie Brandt. The Gophers had a chance to put the game away right there with runners on second and third and one out on the board but Missouri escaped with back-to-back strikeouts.
The eighth inning went into the international tiebreak rule where a runner starts on second. Missouri took advantage by scoring three and securing the victory. Fiser took her first loss of the season. She allowed just two hits and struck out five in five innings. Autumn Pease got the start and went three innings with five strikeouts.
Game Two: Minnesota 10, South Alabama 0
For the second day in a row, Fiser recorded 13 strikeouts and tied her career high for the seventh time. She took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and picked up her second victory of the season in six innings of work. She kept the Gophers afloat in a pitching duel until the bats came alive in the seventh inning.
The Gophers scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning but took control of the game in the final frame. They batted around the order in the top of the seventh. Hansen knocked in four RBIs on two seventh inning at-bats with a double to center and a single to right.
Quotable
"I think it shows how our team handles adversity to come out strong in the second game after the loss," Hansen said. "We have to be a gritty team (tomorrow). We just want to fight and compete and do everything for each other."
Noteable
Five new Gophers have made starts over the weekend between freshmen and transfers: Kianna Jones, Autumn Pease, Olivia Peterson, Sydney Strelow and Brooke Vander Heide.
