Schoeberl, Stanke Deliver in Midweek Victory over Creighton

3/10/2020 10:38:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – Using a sixth inning comeback, the Minnesota Baseball team opened their first of two midweek games against Creighton with a win on Tuesday, 5-3.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Gopher offense erupted for three runs on four hits.
It all began with a Zack Raabe one-out single to left – one of the second baseman's four base hits on the night. Minnesota strung together a series of hits from there, with Otto Grimm knotting the game at one run apiece with a two-out RBI single to center.

Back in an even ballgame, Sam Ireland loaded up the bases with a pinch-hit walk. At that point, Chase Stanke walked to the plate with two outs and a Gopher on every base – and the Minnesota backstop delivered in resounding fashion.

After working the count full, Stanke connected and drove the ball over the center fielder's head for a two-run ground-rule double. The two-out hit effectively gave the Gophers a 3-1 lead and the Maroon and Gold would not surrender the advantage from that point on.

The big inning came just in time to make Minnesota starter Trent Schoeberl the pitcher of record, as the young right-hander lasted six full innings on the mound. Schoeberl ended with a final line of six innings pitched with one run allowed on just two hits, one walk and a career-high seven strikeouts.

With Schoeberl lifted from the game, Bubba Horton entered in relief and held the Bluejays in check into the ninth inning. Following Horton's first scoreless frame in the seventh, the U tacked on another two runs of insurance in the bottom half on a pair of RBI singles from Jack Kelly and Grimm.

With a 5-1 lead in the ninth, Ireland took over for Horton and subsequently earned the second save of his career. Ireland tossed one scoreless inning, allowing two hits and striking out two batters to secure the victory.

Schoeberl improved to 2-0 on the season with the midweek win. Creighton reliever Griffin Holderfield received the loss, pitching two-thirds of an inning and surrendering three runs on three hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Quotable
"I think the day off yesterday and most of today was the best thing that could have happened. It starts on the mound. Schoeberl went out there and did an outstanding job of competing on the mound and executing pitches," said head coach John Anderson. "The kid is going to be a very good pitcher at this level. I think he grew up out there tonight. Our guys really competed at home plate tonight and were able to have a big inning at the right time."

"This win is huge. Our morale has been down for a couple days after losing two of three to Utah. Coming back with a win in the midweek is all we need. We just need a couple wins to spark us," said Raabe. "At the plate, I'm just trying to keep swinging and using my approach to take it the other way. Every at bat is a new at bat. You can't dwell on the success or the failure."

Notable
Raabe finished four-for-four at the plate with a double and two runs scored, raising his Big Ten Conference-leading batting average to .476. The effort marks Raabe's second four-hit game in a row and his third game with three-plus hits in four contests.

Schoeberl earned the second win of his college career on Tuesday night while setting a new career high with seven strikeouts.

Jack Wassel increased his hitting streak to 10 games with a base hit to left field in the fourth inning.

Up Next
Minnesota hosts Creighton again on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium in the second and final midweek game between the two teams.
