Creighton vs. Minnesota
First Pitch: 6:00 p.m. CT
Location: U.S. Bank Stadium
Minnesota Starter: RHP Nolan Burchill (0-1, 12.71 ERA)
Creighton Starter: TBD
Week five of the 2020 season brings the Gopher Baseball program an abbreviated, two-game midweek series at U.S. Bank Stadium, as the Bluejays of Creighton venture to Minneapolis for a non-conference battle. Both teams are still looking to find their groove this season, with Creighton coming in at 5-8, while the Gophers find themselves maintaining a 6-10 mark through the first four weeks of play.
Despite being an NCAA Tournament team a year ago, Creighton has experienced their fair share of early season struggles. With a pair of midweek games against the Bluejays preceding a road trip to the Air Force Academy, Minnesota is looking to return to their winning ways over the next two days as they wrap up play at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Â
Last Time Out
Minnesota embarks on a two-game midweek series with Creighton after wrapping up a 1-2 showing against Utah over the weekend. After winning the series' opener thanks to a stellar pitching performance from Max Meyer, the Gophers came up short in games two and three despite scoring 11 runs in the series premiere.
Â
Meyer First Gopher With 15K Since Perkins
In his Friday night victory against Utah, Meyer became the first Gopher pitcher to strike out 15 batters in one game since Glen Perkins in 2004. Meyer tossed eight innings without allowing an earned run, scattering four hits and two walks while throwing 118 pitches. As a result, Meyer was named one of nine National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Â
Season Snapshot
As the Gophers turn their attention to the Bluejays, they sport a 6-10 record on the campaign after starting the year 5-4. Minnesota has yet to play a true road contest, but are 2-2 on neutral turf and 4-8 at home so far in 2020. Although the Maroon & Gold sit below .500, they possess signature victories against Oregon, Arizona, TCU and North Carolina this season.
Â
Against the Bluejays
The Gophers own an all-time record of 26-23 against the Blujays, with the two teams having last competed head-to-head in a three-game series in 2018. Creighton took two-of-three games from Minnesota in that series, but the Gophers claimed the third and final game in decisive fashion, 15-1, and notching 20 hits as a team to back up six scoreless innings from Patrick Fredrickson.
Â
Winningest Coaches Boast Over 2,000 Victories
Minnesota's John Anderson and Creighton's Ed Servais are each the winningest head coaches in the history of their respective universities and have combined to win over 2,050 games during their tenures.
Â
Meyer Sits Top-Five in NCAA in Strikeouts
As of March 10, Meyer boasts the fourth-most strikeouts in the entire NCAA with 46 through 27 2/3 innings pitched. With those totals, Meyer's 14.96 K/9 ranks 21st in the country. As a pitching staff, Minnesota is within the top-15 in the NCAA with an 11.9 K/9.
Â
Raabe Among Top-30 Hitters in Nation
With a .441 batting average (26-for-59), Zack Raabe enters the midweek 28th in the country in hitting. Through 15 games played, the Minnesota second baseman already has five games with three or more hits -- the most of any Gopher.
Â
Grimm Goes Deep
Redshirt freshman Otto Grimm launched the first home run of his career in Sunday's 17-11 loss to Utah. Grimm hit a solo home run to straightaway center field in the sixth inning of the game and is now slashing .375/.484/.542 through 24 at bats this season.
Â
Going Streaking
Both Jack Wassel and Andrew Wilhite are currently riding nine game hitting streaks, with Wassel also owning an 11-game on-base streak. Raabe has an eight-game on-base streak of his own, with his previous on-base streak of 19 games having been snapped on Feb. 23 against TCU.
Â
Milestone Watch
As the lone senior on the roster, Jordan Kozicky has numerous career milestones in sight as he embarks on his final season in Gold Country. Kozicky is just 33 hits away from reaching 200 for his career, while also being within striking distance of Minnesota's top-10 all-time lists in the following stats: doubles (seven needed), home runs (six needed), and RBI (40 needed). Already in 2020, Kozicky moved onto the career top-10 list for most hit by pitches, currently in 10th place all-time with 20.
Up Next
Minnesota travels to Colorado Springs, Colo. this upcoming weekend (March 13-15) for a three-game series with Air Force.
