2020 Golden Goldys Nominees Announced
4/13/2020 1:42:00 PM | Student-Athlete Development
Despite the 2019-20 academic and athletic seasons finishing in a different way this year, the Golden Goldys lives on! Gopher Athletics has announced its nominees for the 2020 awards and will announce the winners during an online show later this spring for student-athletes, coaches and staff. Student-athletes, coaches and staff will have opportunity to vote by signing into their online University of Minnesota account.
The 2019-20 Golden Goldys marks the 14th-annual event and ninth-straight year the awards are held in conjunction with the Scholar Athlete awards.
During this event, Gopher Athletics will recognize student-athletes and their athletic and academic accomplishments throughout the season. Athletic awards handed out include the athletes of the year, the rookies of the year, breakthrough performances and teams of the year. New this year and in an effort for gender neutrality, the male and female coach of the year award has been combined into one head coach award. The voting includes spring sports of 2019 (baseball, men's and women's golf, rowing, softball, men's and women's outdoor track & field and men's and women's tennis) and the fall and winter sports of the 2019-20 athletic year.
Along with the athletic accomplishments, the department will also honor and recognize the academic achievements of its 675 student-athletes. Academic awards include 4.0 GPA, Gladys Brooks and Norman Borlaug Commitment to Academic Excellence Award, Top Five GPA Awards, Richard "Pinky" McNamara Student-Athlete Achievement Award, Outstanding Academic Team Awards, Lindahl Academic Outstanding Student-Athlete Achievement Award and Land O'Lakes Outstanding Achievement Award in Leadership and Service award. Two Big Ten awards will also be handed out in the Postgraduate Scholarship and Big Ten Medal of Honor.
