Rachel Schow ran a career best time of 8.30 seconds in the women's 60-meter hurdles final at the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field and cross country program had many memorable moments in 2019-20 worth revisiting and celebrating despite the indoor season ending and the outdoor season being canceled on March 12, 2020, when the Big Ten Conference and NCAA announced they were ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns.
One of those memorable moments was senior Rachel Schow's performance in the women's 60-meter hurdles at the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. Schow ran back-to-back career-best times in the preliminary heats and the finals on the way to a top-five finish. The Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native set a PR of 8.39 seconds to secure a place in the 60-meter hurdles final before clocking a career-best time of 8.30 seconds to take fifth in the final.
"Walking up to the 60-meter hurdles final, I was already confident from my PR the day before in prelims," Schow said. "It was my last race, and I knew the team race for the Big Ten title was tight, so every point mattered for the team. When I got the line I could hear the team cheering on the sides, and I just focused on running for the team and nothing else.
"The race felt like everything came together at the right moment. I had a rocky start to the season, so it felt even better to finally have a breakthrough at the right moment. I also was positioned between some very speedy gals, so that put me in a great position to run my best time."
"Rachel's race at Big Tens was great," director of track & field/cross country Matt Bingle said. "She had struggled through the season, so for her to really show up the way she did at the Big Ten meet was impressive. The challenging season she had made her performance even more special."
"When I look back on that day, I think what stands out most to me was how excited my coaches and teammates were for me in the moment," Schow said. "It was an awesome feeling to be able to pull out one of my best performances for the team and celebrate with my teammates for a brief moment. There was so much energy and excitement coming from the team that every gopher could use as support and fuel for their event. We all came together for the team and that is a feeling I won't forget!"
Schow's PR improved her mark on Minnesota's all-time top-10 list where she ranks third among all-time Gophers in the 60-meter hurdles, behind only Kimberly Golding and Emma Spagnola, who are co-record holders in the event at 8.13 seconds. Schow is also part of the second, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th-ranked indoor 4x400-meter relay performances in program history. Among Minnesota's top-10 outdoor performances, Schow lands second all-time in the 400-meter hurdles (57.47) and third in the 100-meter hurdles (13.51). She is also part of Minnesota's program-record holding 4x100-meter relay team (44.22) and 4x400-meter relay team (3:32.25).
"Rachel comes to practice each day ready to work, which makes my job easy," Bingle said. "She's a driven young women and a good leader. It has been a great pleasure to coach her, and we will miss her a lot."
