MINNEAPOLIS – Junior right-handed pitcher Max Meyer and sophomore second baseman Zack Raabe have each been named All-Americans for the 2020 season by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, as announced by the publication Tuesday morning. Both players received Second Team All-American honors.
Â
As a consensus Preseason All-American, Meyer is coming off a 2020 season that saw his MLB Draft stock rise to a potential top-10 overall selection. Across 27 2/3 innings of work, Meyer pitched to a 3-1 record and 1.95 ERA to go along with 46 strikeouts against just eight walks. Included in his 2020 resume was a complete game victory, 14-strikeout performance against North Carolina on Feb. 28. One week later, Meyer became the first Gopher pitcher since Glen Perkins in 2004 to strike out 15 batters in one game while earning the win against Utah on March 6.
Â
All told, Meyer wrapped up his Gopher career with a lifetime 2.07 ERA and 187 strikeouts over 148 innings pitched. Meyer's 2.07 ERA ranks fourth all-time at Minnesota, while his 18 saves are the third-most in 132 seasons of the program's history. With the newly-added All-American Second Team accolade, Meyer has now earned All-American status in each of his three seasons in Maroon and Gold, having been named to CBN's Third Team in both 2018 and 2019.
Â
For Raabe, Tuesday's announcement comes as the young infielder's first career All-American honor. While starting 17 games for the Gophers at the keystone, Raabe enjoyed a true breakout sophomore campaign as he paced the entire NCAA Division I in hits with 31. Raabe finished the season with a .463/.526/.612 slash line including one home run, seven doubles, 41 total bases, 16 runs scored and 10 RBI. Among qualifying Big Ten hitters, Raabe ranked first in batting average and hits, second in total bases and on-base percentage, third in doubles and sixth in slugging percentage.
Â
Although Meyer will soon hear his name called at the 2020 MLB Draft next month, Raabe will be back for his true junior season in 2021. As a result of his excellent sophomore showing, Raabe was recently tabbed as the No. 5 overall second baseman in the country heading into next season.
