CRCA Honors Seven Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has listed Gophers senior Lauren Burrows-Cheng among the nominees for 2020 Pocock All-America honors while six other Maroon & Gold student-athletes earned CRCA Scholar Athlete accolades for the season.
A native of Hobart, Tasmania, Burrows-Cheng opened the fall season with a pair of podium finishes at the Head of the Mississippi – finishing first with the first varsity eight boat and second with the first varsity four boat. She closed out the campaign with a 26th-place finish with the first varsity eight boat at the Head of the Charles. The season ended on March 12, 2020 when the Big Ten and the NCAA announced they were ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-10 public health concerns. Due to the cancelation, Division I coaches were allowed to nominate student-athletes for All-America honors in 2020 although selected candidates will not be named All-Americans.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Eliasen, Erika Guenther, Gabby Mullally, Natalie Stratton, Sarah Von der Goltz and Melissa Wiebke represented the University of Minnesota as 2020 CRCA Scholar Athletes. All six earned Academic All-Big Ten honors earlier this month as part of a school record 36 rowing student-athletes to earn the accolade. This year's CRCA Scholar Athlete honor criteria was modified after the cancelation of the season. Student-athletes must be in their second, third, or fourth year of eligibility, must be ranked performance-wise in the top 50% of their team, or in the "NCAA Squad" (whichever is smaller) at the conclusion of the 2020 season*, and must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career, and through the fall semester or quarter for the current competition year. *Formerly: Race in an NCAA boat for 75% of the season or at the conference championships
