MINNEAPOLIS – As Gopher Hockey prepares for a historic season in 2020-21, GopherSports.com takes one last look back at the 2019-20 campaign with our Top Moments of the Season.
Gopher Hockey closed out the decade on a high note as the Maroon & Gold won the Mariucci Classic with victories over Bemidji State (5-2) and St. Cloud State (4-1).
After a two-year layoff, the Mariucci Classic returned in 2019-20 with a special all-Minnesota lineup. The Gophers' weekend opener with Bemidji State saw Bob Motzko earn his 300th career coaching win while Minnesota also returned to play for the first time since the passing of legendary Pride on Ice player and coach Doug Woog. The Gophers unveiled their gold "Wooger" jerseys for the game and proceeded to go 4-0-0 the rest of the season when wearing the tribute jerseys.
The championship game was equally notable as Minnesota picked up its 15th Mariucci Classic title as Motzko won his first meeting against his former squad and Bryce Brodzinski and Jack Perbix came out on top in the Battle of the Brothers.
Minnesota closed out the decade with a 218-138-35 record, having recorded two Frozen Four appearances and setting an NCAA record with six-straight conference championships. The Gophers have now won 15 of 27 Mariucci Classics and own a 38-17-3 all-time record at the tournament.
