Top Moments: Luck of the Gophers
6/22/2020 5:22:00 PM | Men's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS – As Gopher Hockey prepares for a historic season in 2020-21, GopherSports.com takes one last look back at the 2019-20 campaign with our Top Moments of the Season.
With 11 freshmen and the title of college hockey's youngest team, the Gophers took a little while to build team chemistry for the 2019-20 campaign. But when they did…watch out.
Minnesota returned from winter break and proceeded to win eight of its first 10 games to start the second half before heading into a road series at Notre Dame that saw the Maroon & Gold take five out of six Big Ten points on the weekend.
A big part of that weekend's success was the play of Brannon McManus and Ben Meyers including a third period goal that saw McManus drop a pass between his legs for Meyers to fire home – sparking the Gophers to a two-goal rally in the third period of a 2-1 win on Feb. 15, 2020.
McManus, who added an assist on the eventual game winner for Saturday's series finale, had another highlight performance on Friday to snag the Big Ten bonus point on Minnesota's first and only shootout attempt of the night.
McManus would go on to set a new career high with 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists) on the year while Meyers tallied was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and tallied 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) – tying for second among all Big Ten freshmen and tying for 11th among all NCAA freshmen in points.
