MINNEAPOLIS – The Big Ten Conference announced its 2019-20 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipients on Wednesday with a University of Minnesota record 119 student-athletes earning recognition from the conference.
A total of 22 Maroon & Gold programs were represented on this year's Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award list while the last three seasons have boasted Minnesota's three highest totals for honorees (119 in 2019-20, 94 in 2018-19, 108 in 2017-18).
Meanwhile, 18 University of Minnesota student-athletes maintained perfect 4.0 grade point averages during the 2019-20 academic year with Meleah Biermaier, Carlie Brandt, Emily Cook, Tyler Davis, Aidan Dulaney, Abbey Erwin, Megan Hasz, Ellee Jensen, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Lindsey Kozelsky, Val Larson, Duncan Lester, Zetta Mason, Lexi Montgomery, Jeremy Moser, Abbie Nylin, Taylor Wente and Alex Woken representing the Maroon & Gold with unblemished records this year.
Faculty Representatives from each Big Ten university established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Recipients must receive All-Big Ten recognition during the previous academic year, be enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters), and earn a minimum of a 3.70 GPA, excluding summer classes. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
Wednesday's school record is the latest academic highlight for Minnesota in a school year that saw the Gophers set a new department record for cumulative grade point average at 3.36 in the spring of 2020 (the fifth-straight semester that statistic has improved). Additionally, 'U' student-athletes combined to set new school records for term grade point average in both the fall (3.33) and the spring (3.36) of the 2019-20 academic year. Previously, the Big Ten recognized 375 Gopher student-athletes with Academic All-Big Ten honors while eight 'U' competitors were selected as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans from a total of 23 CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees this year.
