MINNEAPOLIS – The newest members of the University of Minnesota women's hockey team represent the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, according to NeutralZone.net. The Gophers welcome eight newcomers to the program for the 2020-21 season, including five individuals ranked among the nation's top-12 players in the Class of 2020 according to the website.
Led by national No. 1 recruit Abbey Murphy, a right-handed forward from the Chicago Mission, the top-ranked Minnesota freshman class also includes top-10 recruits Maggie Nicholson, a left-handed defense from Minnetonka High School who comes in at No. 3, and Addie Burton, a left-handed forward from the Blake School who ranks No. 7 in the NeutralZone.net player rankings.
A right-handed forward from the Pursuit of Excellence Academy, Anne Cherkowski comes in at No. 11 in the overall ranking and is the No. 3 ranked Canadian player. Forward Audrey Wethington rounds out Minnesota's top-ranked individuals at No. 12 after a standout high school career at the Blake School.
Fellow freshmen Josey Dunne, a left-handed defense from the Chicago Mission, and Tella Jungels, a left-handed forward and three-time Minnesota Class AA state champion from Edina High School complete Minnesota's incoming freshmen class while All-WCHA goaltender Lauren Bench joins the Maroon & Gold as a graduate student after beginning her collegiate career at Bemidji State.
The Gophers have now had the nation's top-ranked recruiting class in three of the last four seasons, coming in at No. 1 in 2017, 2018, and 2020. Top-10 players Grace Zumwinkle (No. 3) and Taylor Wente (No. 8) led Minnesota's incoming class in 2017 while No. 1 Amy Potomak, No. 2 Taylor Heise, and No. 5 Emily Oden headlined the nation's No. 1 recruiting class in 2018. Madeline Wethington was the No. 1 individually-ranked player in the Class of 2019 as well.
The eight newest Gophers join 15 players returning from last year's 27-6-3 team, which qualified for the NCAA tournament before the season ended when the NCAA announced it was ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns. Minnesota returns three of its top four and 11 of its top-13 leading scorers from a year ago led by Grace Zumwinkle, Taylor Heise, and Amy Potomak. Head coach Brad Frost returns for his 14th season at the helm of Gopher women's hockey in 2020-21 as well.
