LAKE ELMO, Minn. - Rising senior Angus Flanagan drained an eagle putt on the final hole to put himself in position to win the 2020 Minnesota State Open, headlining a host of current and former Gopher men's golfers in the field. The tournament concluded Thursday at Royal Golf Club.
Flanagan, who held a one-shot lead after 53 holes of play, stuck his approach shot on the par-5, 505-yard 18th within six feet of the cup, and sank his putt for a 3, finishing his round at 8-under-par 64 and 15-under-par for the tournament (68-69-64ā201). Flanagan ended the event two shots clear of the tournament runner-up and claimed the new course record after his round Thursday.
In addition, during the trophy presentation Flanagan was awarded a sponsor's exemption into the PGA TOUR's 3M Open, being contested later this month at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine.
Finishing in the top-10 as well was Gopher alum and current assistant coach Matt Rachey, who tied for ninth place at 6-under par (69-68-73ā210). Other Gophers to place in the top-25 included Justin Doeden '17 who tied for 12th (74-72-66ā212), former Gopher hockey player Ben Clymer (T-21st, 68-76-71ā215) and current rising sophomore Connor Glynn (T-23rd, 75-69-72ā216).
