The 2019-2020 University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team was recognized as the No. 3 academic team in the nation by the College Gymnastics Association on Friday. The Maroon & Gold had all nineteen of its student-athletes receive All-American Scholar honors.
With a combined team GPA of 3.553, this marks the second consecutive year that the Gophers have earned a third-place finish in the team rankings behind only Stanford and William & Mary. It's also the second year in a row that the team has ranked the highest of any Big Ten squad.
"It's a tribute to the type of student-athletes we attract to come to the University of Minnesota," said head coach Mike Burns. "Even with a season ending pandemic they were able to stay focused on the task of pushing themselves to maintain the level of excellence our program demands. I'm very proud of the entire squad and my hat goes off to each and every one of them."
All 19 members of the Gopher 2019-2020 men's gymnastics team received either first or second team recognition as All-American Scholar-Athletes, with athletes having at least a 3.20 GPA being named to the Second Team, and athletes over a 3.50 being named to the First Team. This tied Minnesota with Stanford with the most student-athlete representatives overall, and put the Maroon & Gold at No. 1 in the Big Ten. Junior Tyler Davis was one of just 11 student-athletes to achieve a 4.0 GPA.
Alongside Davis, Colton Dee, Henry Meeker, Shane Wiskus, Ben Eyles, Jake Sawyer, Danny Yoon, Crew Bold, Andrew Hyde, and Valen Watrous were all named to the First Team.Timmy Kutyla, Russell Johnson, Garrett Kasiski, Mike Moran, Eric Nakamura, David Pochinka, Matt Sullivan, Donte McKinney, and Victor Perez all received Second Team nods.
