Summer League Recap: Gopher Pitchers
8/27/2020 9:27:00 AM | Baseball
Since the onset of July, members of the Gopher Baseball program have been competing in various summer baseball leagues across the nation. While many played for their respective town teams due to the uniqueness of this summer, there were also a handful of Gophers that participated in developmental collegiate leagues, such as the Northwoods League, Sunbelt Baseball League and Expedition League.
Altogether, 27 Gophers were involved with some level of summer play. After taking a final look at the end-of-season performances of University of Minnesota hitters last week, we wrap up our summer update series with a review of how Maroon & Gold hurlers refined their craft this offseason.
Will Anderson | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
While tossing scoreless appearances in three of his five summer outings, Anderson finished with a 2-0 record and 4.69 ERA across 7 2/3 innings of work. Batters managed to hit just .136 against Anderson, as the rising sophomore southpaw allowed just three hits all summer long.
Noah DeLuga | Rockford Rivets | Northwoods League
With 22 innings pitched, DeLuga fired the second-most frames of any Gopher this summer. Over 11 games and three starts, DeLuga nailed down two saves while notching a 5.32 ERA and striking out 20 batters.
Ryan Duffy | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
Duffy had perhaps the best summer showing of any Gopher hurler, firing 19 2/3 frames of 3.20 ERA ball with 19 strikeouts. The rising senior left-hander surrendered just 13 hits on the season, with only three going for extra bases.
Drew Hmielewski | Marshall A's | Town Team
Although Hmielewski is known more for his bat and defensive prowess, he also made five pitching appearances over the summer. Over 5 1/3 innings pitched, Hmielewski recorded two saves and struck out 10 batters (16.9 strikeouts-per-nine innings) while coughing up a mere two hits.
Bubba Horton | Delano A's | Town Team
After giving up three runs in his first appearance of the season, Horton settled in and fired 4 1/3 subsequent innings with just two runs allowed, striking out eight during that span. All in all, Horton worked 5 1/3 frames with one save and an unearthly 20.3 K/9 to his credit.
Jack Liffrig | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
In his long-awaited return to the mound, Liffrig suited up for the Dock Spiders and fired nine innings of 1.00 ERA ball. Liffrig totaled eight strikeouts against just three walks while also being credited with one save. Opposing hitters batted a mere .161 against the rising redshirt sophomore southpaw.
Gus Radel | Pierre Trappers | Expedition League
Radel tossed 8 2/3 innings in the Expedition League over the summer, ending with a .226 batting average against and a 9.3 K/9. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also allowed fewer hits (seven) than innings pitched, including just one extra base hit against all season.
Trent Schoeberl | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
Schoeberl's 26 innings paced all Gophers this summer, but that was not the only impressive component of his performance. Appearing in eight games including four starts, Schoeberl posted a 3.81 ERA while registering 20 strikeouts. Schoeberl allowed just four extra base hits, as opposing hitters batted just .235 against the rising sophomore right-hander.
Bennett Theisen | St. Paul Hops | Town Team
Saving the best for last, there is not one Gopher who can claim they had a better summer than Theisen. While he stayed local and pitched for the St. Paul Hops, Theisen did not allow a single run all season over the course of 9 1/3 innings pitched. Theisen's perfect 0.00 ERA also came with a 2-0 record and 15 strikeouts, translating to a 14.5 K/9. Theisen allowed just one hit in his nine-plus innings of work.
