MINNEAPOLIS – Six tournaments during the regular season highlight the Minnesota men's golf team's 2021 schedule, head coach Justin Smith announced Wednesday.
"Our coaches and student-athletes are so excited to be out competing again this spring against some of the best programs in the country," Smith said. "We are so thankful that our University and athletic department has provided an environment that is safe for us to compete during these challenging times. I know we all are excited to pursue our goals and represent the University of Minnesota with pride."
The spring season starts with the traditional Big Ten Match Play (Feb. 5-6) at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.
After a month break, the Golden Gophers then return to the course March 8-9 for the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island in Sea Island, Ga. They then close out the month at The Goodwin in Palo Alto, Calif., March 25-27.
As the calendar turns to April, Minnesota heads to Big Ten country for its final three tournaments.
It starts with the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., April 3-4. The Gophers return to the state the following weekend for the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., April 10-11, while the regular season wraps up at the Git R Done Husker Invitational, April 17-18, in Lincoln, Neb.
Postseason play begins with the Big Ten Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., April 30 through May 2. NCAA Regionals commence at various sites May 17-19, while the NCAA Finals are scheduled for May 28 through June 2 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
Minnesota returns the top five scorers and eight letterwinners from when the squad last competed in fall of 2019.
The team's top returner is senior Angus Flanagan, Minnesota's first All-American in six years. He posted a 69.33 stroke average through five tournaments last fall and tallied three top-10 finishes, including medalist honors at the Macdonald Cup while also placing second at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate just over one week later.
In addition to his scoring average, the Woking, England, native led the Golden Gophers last fall in percentage of scores counted (96.7), rounds under par (11), tournaments leading the team (4), top-10 finishes (3) and top-20 finishes (3).
This summer, he has won medalist honors at the Western Amateur Championship, Minnesota State Open and Minnesota Golf Champions. He made his PGA TOUR debut at the 3M Open in July thanks to a sponsor's exemption following his win at the State Open.
Also returning is sophomore Connor Glynn, who was named All-Big Ten Second Team. Glynn joined Flanagan as the only Gophers to compete in all five tournaments last fall, and he finished as the No. 2 scorer for Minnesota behind Flanagan with an average score of 71.33. Glynn was also second on the squad with six rounds under par, 86.1 percent of his rounds counting toward the team score, while his two top-20 finishes tied for second most.
In addition to their eight returning letterwinners, including fifth-year senior Thomas Longbella, the Gophers welcome two freshmen in Alex Eickhoff and Ben Warian.
