Gophers Record Highest Season Opening Score in Program History

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - The Minnesota women's gymnastics team set a new program record in their win over Iowa with a score of 197.025 to Iowa's 196.450. The 197.025 team score is the highest season opening score in program history. 

Notable
Minnesota's 197.025 sets a new program record for a season opening score. Ona Loper tied her career-high all-around score with a 39.625 and set a career best on bars (9.925) and floor (9.950). 

Four Gophers made their first ever appearance in the Maroon and Gold leo. Mya Hooten performed on both bars (9.750) and floor (9.950). Gianna Gerdes made her debut on vault (9.750), while Emily Koch put up a score of 9.625 on vault and 9.825 on floor. Erin Fortman was the final newcomer to debut, with an elegant floor routine that earned her a 9.850.

"We have been feeling so good about this team, and to come out and start the season like this is pretty exciting," head coach Jenny Hansen said. 

"Our number one goal this season is just to go out and have fun," senior Mary Korlin-Downs said. "We know that we do better when we have fun and that is always a focus before, during and after the meet."

All-Around
Ona Loper kicked off the season with a 39.625 in the all-around to claim the title. The senior was first on vault and tied for first on bars and floor. Lexy Ramler placed second in the all-around with a 39.550, notably earning a 9.975 on beam. 

Event Breakdown
Vault
Minnesota edged Iowa on vault with a team score of 49.100. Loper won the event title with a 9.950. Quarles took second place with a 9.925 and Ramler finished in the third spot after scoring 9.850. Freshman Gianna Gerdes and Emily Koch each made their Gopher debut on the event. Gerdes notched a 9.750 and Koch scored 9.625. 

Bars
Loper and Ramler led the way for the Gophers with a 9.925 and a tie for first place. Hannah Willmarth was Minnesota's next-highest finisher with a score of 9.875. Tiarre Sales recorded a 9.825 and Hooten rounded out the scoring with a 9.750. The Gophers posted a team score of 49.300.

Beam
The Gophers topped the Hawkeyes on beam with a 49.250 team score. Ramler continued her success from the previous season and earned a 9.975 on the event. Ali Sonier took a share of second place and recorded a 9.850. Lexi Montgomery was the next highest scoring Gopher at fourth place with a 9.825. Loper and Korlin-Downs were just behind with a pair of 9.800s to tie for seventh. 

Floor
Hooten and Loper claimed the floor title with their scores of 9.950. Fortman had a strong first performance with the Gophers as she placed sixth and notched a 9.850. Koch tied for seventh, scoring 9.825. Sonier and Ramler both put up 9.800. The Maroon and Gold combined for an overall score of 49.375 on the event.

Minnesota travels to Michigan next weekend to take on the Wolverines on Friday, January 22. The meet is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ESPN U.
