MADISON, Wis. -- The Golden Gopher women's hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to Wisconsin at LaBahn Arena on Saturday.
The teams took a 3-3 tie into the third period, but Wisconsin (6-2-0, 6-2-0 WCHA) netted a pair of quick goals to take a two-goal lead for the second time in the game and added an empty-net goal in the final minute to hand Minnesota (8-3-0, 8-3-0 WCHA) its third loss of the season.
The Gophers fell behind 2-0 before Grace Zumwinkle scored on the power play in the final 90 seconds of the opening period to cut the deficit to one after the opening 20 minutes.
Amy Potomak then tied the game at 2-2 at the 2:33 mark of the second period. The Badgers regained the lead on a power-play goal by Britta Curl at 11:07, but Josey Dunne responded just 41 seconds later to knot the game at 3-3 through 40 minutes. However, Wisconsin had the advantage in the third period.
For the game, Lauren Bench finished with 22 saves while Wisconsin's Kennedy Blair made 23 saves. Minnesota trailed in shots on goal, 28-26.
Quotable
"Well, a good hockey game here tonight, not the result we wanted, but our team fought," head coach Brad Frost said. "Unfortunately we were just climbing back each period, so it was difficult to get that go-ahead goal. We showed some really good signs of who we can be and who we want to be, so we're excited to see that moving forward."
Notable
Zumwinkle's first-period goal marked her 75th goal of her career. She is now tied for 11th among all-time Gophers with 75 career goals, matching Bobbi Ross's career total from 2004-07.
Up Next
Minnesota has a week off from competition before going back on the road for a series with the Buckeyes on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30.
