Gophers Sweep with 10-2 Victory

1/22/2021 7:41:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS – After going more than 17 years without scoring 10 goals against an opponent, the No. 4 Gopher men's hockey program did it in back-to-back games this week after a 10-2 win over Arizona State on Friday afternoon at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Minnesota (13-3-0 overall, 9-3-0-0-0-0 Big Ten) picked up its sixth sweep of the season after starting the series with a 10-0 win on Thursday night. The last time Minnesota scored 10 goals or more in a game before this week was a 10-3 win over Minnesota State on Jan. 17, 2004.

Fourteen Gophers tallied points in the series finale including eight multi-point performances. Blake McLaughlin and Jack Perbix led the way with three points each as both forwards contributed two goals and an assist. McLaughlin ended the series with seven points (four goals, three assists).

Minnesota and Arizona State (5-13-2) traded goals in the first period before the home squad put a little distance between the teams by outscoring the Sun Devils 3-1 in the second. The third period was all Maroon & Gold as the Gophers scored six times in the final frame.

Jared Moe (2-0-0) made 19 saves on 21 shots to pick up the win for Minnesota while Evan DeBrouwer (3-9-1) suffered the loss for Arizona State while making 37 saves on 47 shots.

The Gophers outshot the Sun Devils 47-21 on the night.

Minnesota returns to Big Ten play next weekend with a two-game series at Ohio State. The action starts on Friday, Jan. 29 at 5:00 p.m. CT (TV: Big Ten Network; Stream: FOX Sports App; Radio: 1130 KTLK-AM/103.5 FM) with the series final on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4:00 p.m. CT (TV: Big Ten Network; Stream: FOX Sports App; Radio: 1130 KTLK-AM/103.5 FM).

Noteworthy
A night after tallying his first points as a Gopher with two assists, Carl Fish added his first career goal in Friday's finale to end the series with three points for the Maroon & Gold.

Quotes from Coach
"We've been seeing this in practice for some time. We know he's going to be a pretty good player. He just keeps getting better," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said of freshman Carl Fish. "As he gets more comfortable, Carl Fish has a chance to be an outstanding player for us. This kid wants to win.
