Gophers Earn Second-Straight Sweep Over MSU

The University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Michigan State, 26-24, 25-22, 25-12, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, Minnesota improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in league action. MSU drops to 0-2 this season in overall and Big Ten play.
The Golden Gophers were led by Stephanie Samedy, who had a match-best 14 kills and a six blocks, followed by Adanna Rollins with nine kills. Melani Shaffmaster had 21 assists, one ace and completed her first collegiate double double with 11 digs. CC McGraw led all individuals with 15 digs, while Regan Pittman and Katie Myers each had four kills and four blocks apiece.
As a team, Minnesota hit just .189 for the match when it had 38 kills, but provided eight blocks, six aces 54 digs. MSU had 34 kills, hit .111, had six blocks, one ace and 44 digs.
Notables:
-Jenna Wenaas made her collegiate debut when she came into the match in the second set. She had four kills in eight attempts and had two digs.
-Minnesota is now 57-19 all-time against the Spartans.

Minnesota travels to Maryland, Jan. 29-30. The Gophers and Terrapins will play at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday, while the Saturday match is set to take place at 5 p.m. CT. Friday's match is also televised on Big Ten Network, while Saturday's tilt will be on BTN +.
Set Breakdown
Set 1: Despite Michigan State holding six blocks, Minnesota came back to win the set, 26-24. The two teams went through 13 tie scores and five lead changes in the first. Trailing 17-20 in the set, Minnesota had a kill from Pittman, an ace by Pittman and an MSU attack error to tie the set at 20-20. Michigan State went up 23-21 as the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota responded strung together three straight, including two kills from Samedy. The two teams tied again at 24 before Minnesota had a MSU service error and a Samedy kill to go up, 1-0.
Set 2: Minnesota trailed early, 3-7, only to go on a four-point swing to tie the set at 7-7 off a Myers kill. The Gophers went up 15-11 off a CC McGraw ace. Michigan State fought back and tied the set at 16-16 on a kill. The two teams traded points through 18-18 until Minnesota went on a 3-0 run as MSU called a timeout. MSU came within one at 23-22 off an ace, but the Gophers closed out the set on back-to-back errors by MSU, one service and one attack, for a 2-0 lead.

The Gophers opened with a 10-4 run and later went up 17-7 off a Rachel Kilkelly ace. The Gophers went up 22-7 when they rattled off three-straight kills from Myers, Samedy and Rollins. The Gophers were then up 24-9 on a kill from Pittman. MSU had three-straight points before Rollins finished off the set and match.
