Ranta Named Big Ten Second Star

MINNEAPOLIS – After helping the top-ranked Gopher men's hockey program to a sweep over Arizona State earlier this week, Sampo Ranta has been named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

A native of Naantali, Finland, Ranta led all Big Ten skaters and tied for the NCAA lead with three goals over the last week. The forward notched his second career two-goal game on Sunday as the Gophers opened their nonconference series with a 4-1 win and added his third goal of the series in Monday's 6-4 sweep-sealing victory.

Through 10 games this season, Ranta has 10 points (seven goals, three assists) along with an active six-game point streak.

In the program's 100th season, the Maroon & Gold are off to the team's best start in more than 80 years with a 10-0-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in both national polls for the fourth-straight week.

Minnesota returns to Big Ten play later this week with a two-game series against No. 12/14 Wisconsin in Madison. Details for that series will be announced when finalized.
