Gophers Tame Wildcats in Three Sets

10/13/2021 8:29:00 PM | Volleyball

Airi Miyabe led the way with 11 kills

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 12 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated the Northwestern Wildcats in three sets, 25-20, 25-10, 25-14, on Wednesday evening.

"To be in control for big chunks of the match the way we were was impressive," said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "They made an early run but we were able to weather the storm and string together some nice play tonight. It's always great to come away with a win."

The Golden Gophers (10-5, 5-2 Big Ten) were led by redshirt senior opposite Stephanie Samedy, who registered 10 kills, 12 digs and four blocks. Airi Miyabe had a team-high 11 kills while Shea Rubright had five kills and six blocks for the maroon and gold.

As a team, Minnesota hit .318 with 38 kills, four aces, 43 digs and 11 blocks. Northwestern (7-11, 2-5 Big Ten) hit .070 with 29 kills, one ace, 32 digs and six blocks. Temi Thomas-Ailara led Northwestern with 11 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota and Northwestern split the first six points of the match before a 4-0 Gophers run brought their lead to 7-3 and forced the visitors into a timeout. Wenaas had three kills while Miyabe tallied a pair in the first seven points of the set. A kill by Samedy and two from Rubright put the 'U' on a 3-1 run to take a 10-4 lead before the Wildcats went on a 5-2 run to cut the score to 12-9. A kill from Miyabe and a dual block from Rubright and Samedy sparked a 5-3 Gophers run to put them up 17-12 and force another NU timeout. Minnesota kept Northwestern at arms length the rest of the set, allowing them to get no closer than four at 21-17. The Gophers went on to win the first set, 25-20, and hitting .394. Miyabe and Wenaas led the team with five kills each while Samedy had three kills, five digs and three blocks.

Set 2: Northwestern scored four of the six points in set two before a 5-0 Gophers run led to a Wildcats timeout. A kill from Samedy and two block assists from Rubright sparked the run to get the home team going. The Gophers accelerated in the middle of the set, scoring five of the next seven points to go up 13-6 and force another timeout from the visitors. A kill and an ace from Samedy and kills from Myers and Shaffmaster spearheaded the run as the 'U' took its largest lead of either set. Minnesota kept up the pressure after the second timeout and never let up, ending the set on a 12-3 run and winning 25-10. Samedy led the 'U' with three kills on the set while McGraw had eight digs. Minnesota hit .250 and held NU to -.061 in a dominating set two performance.

Set 3: The Gophers came out firing once again in set three, scoring eight of the first 11 to force an NU timeout. Four different Gophers (Miyabe, Myers, Rubright, Samedy) had kills in the first segment of the set. Minnesota would go up 11-4 after a dual block from Myers and Wenaas and a kill from Samedy before the Wildcasts responded with a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 13-8. A 3-1 run by the 'U' after that put the home team up 16-9 and forced another Wildcats timeout. Northwestern would get no closer than six points away for the rest of the set as the Gophers closed out on a 9-5 run to end it, 25-14. Airi Miyabe totaled the final two kills of the match to give her double digit kills in three straight matches.
