Gophers Use Lights-Out Power Play to Down Mavericks 3-0

10/15/2021 8:36:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota’s top power play line tallied all three goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Minnesota State.

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 5/6 Golden Gopher women's hockey team tallied three power play goals on four opportunities to secure a 3-0 win over Minnesota State in game one of this weekend's home-and-home series at Ridder Arena on Friday evening.

Minnesota (2-3-0) had the power play rolling, scoring their first three of the season in four opportunities. All three goals came from the Maroon and Gold's top line with one coming in each period. Madeline Wethington tapped in a rebound in the opening period for her first of the season. Gracie Ostertag also notched her first of the season with a blast from the point in the second. Taylor Heise capped off the scoring with her 100th career point in her 100th career game.

Makayla Pahl posted her first career shutout in her first start of the season, stopping all 14 shots faced. The Gophers dominated in shots 47-14. Mavericks goaltender Calla Frank stopped 44 of 47 shots.

Quotable
"Complete performance here tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "I thought our team played well for 60 minutes, starting from the net out. Makayla Pahl with her first shutout and Taylor Heise with her 100th career point.  The power play was really good after it had been struggling a little bit. Our penalty kill was really good too, so it's nice to win the special teams battle and win in all three phases. Happy about the win and looking forward to tomorrow."

Notable
Taylor Heise recorded her 100th career point in her 100th career game. Makayla Pahl posted her first career shutout. Savannah Norcross played in her 100th career game (95 with Boston College). Ella Huber recorded her first multi-point game.
