Walker Scores Twice as 'U' Wins 4-3 in Overtime

10/16/2021 8:50:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Gophers found two goals from Sammy Walker and one each from Aaron Huglen and Bryce Brodzinski.

MINNEAPOLIS – Sammy Walker scored twice including the overtime winner as the No. 4 Gopher men's hockey program picked up a 4-3 road win over No. 2 St. Cloud State on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Aaron Huglen notched his first career goal for Minnesota (3-1-0 overall, 0-0-0-0-0 Big Ten) while Bryce Brodzinski added his team-high fourth goal of the season.

St. Cloud State (4-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) jumped out to an early lead in the first period before the Gophers pocketed a pair of tallies in the second period from Huglen and Brodzinski. The Huskies found the equalizer twice in the third period in between Walker's first goal of the night to send the game to overtime.

After matching up earlier in the night, the combination of Walker and Blake McLaughlin paired up again 36 seconds into overtime to give the Gophers a win on the road and a weekend split in a top-five series.

Jack LaFontaine (3-1-0) made a season-high 29 saves in net for the Gophers while Minnesota held a one-shot edge over the Huskies at 33-32.

Coach's Comments
"It was a good hockey game, and for the most part I liked how we played both nights," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "I felt we deserved to win that game, and I know it's going to be controversial how it played out. We played the way we were supposed to tonight."

Noteworthy
Sammy Walker has now picked up the game-winning goal in Minnesota's last two overtime contests (a 3-2 win over Michigan on March 15, 2021 in the Big Ten tournament semifinal)..With two assists tonight, McLaughlin now leads the Gophers with seven points (one goal, six assists) and has recorded multi-point performances in three of Minnesota's four games this season.
