Gophers Tied for Third After Round One at Pat Bradley Invitational

The University of Minnesota women's golf team is in third place after Saturday's opening round of the Pat Bradley Invitational at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Florida.
Minnesota shot a 2-under 286, a 18-hole score that ties for ninth best in program history. That puts the Golden Gophers four shots back of Florida Gulf Coast (-6), one shot behind Florida International (-3) and tied with Boston College and Stetson.
"Considering the circumstances of our travel day yesterday, I am really proud of the way the team responded and posted a 2-under-par 286," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We knew coming into this event that this course historically produces low scores, so the need to execute was elevated. We have positioned ourselves well heading into round two to stay in contention."
Leading the way for Minnesota were Grace Curran and Geradine Wong, both of which are tied for seventh after a 2-under 70, six shots behind leader Laura Edmonds of Florida Gulf Coast (-7). The duo of Curran and Wong recorded four birdies each on the day.
Finishing the first round at even-par, Joanne Free is tied for 19th. Free started the day with birdies on No. 1 and 5 to go 2-under at the turn. Her back nine featured another birdie along with a bogey and double bogey.
Junior Leah Herzog posted her best round in her Gophers career with a 2-over 74. She was 1-over on the front and back nine to finish in a tie for 34th. Fellow junior Emma Carpenter was just behind in a tie for 52nd at 4-over (76).
Minnesota will tee off in the second round Sunday morning at 7:50 a.m. CT. Carpenter will start the day and will be followed by Herzog, Free, Curran and Wong.
