MINNEAPOLIS - Antoine Sale shot a 4-under 68 and is in a tie for third place, while the Minnesota men's golf team is in a tie for 11th after the opening round of the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate Saturday at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

"Our guys battled well, especially in the middle part of our round," head coach Justin Smith said. "We have to tighten up our tee shots and make sure we are playing on the offense a lot more the next couple of days. This is a great field and we have a great opportunity to improve each day."

As a team, Minnesota shot a 4-over 292 to open the event. Host Northern Illinois leads the team field at 9-under (279) and is followed closely by Marquette and Purdue (282) in a tie for second place. Individually, Tommy Dunsire and Ben Sluzas from Northern Illinois share a tie for first place at 5-under (67).

Starting on hole 10, Sale struggled with three bogeys on No. 10, 14 and 16. He began to turn it around with an eagle on the par-5 hole 18 to go 1-over at the turn. After an even-par first hole, Sale recorded five birdies and ended the day at a 4-under 68 in a tie for third place.

Lincoln Johnson and Bennett Swavely are in a 2-over tie for 46th (74) after 18 holes. Johnson shot even-par through his first seven holes, but ran into trouble with a triple bogey on No. 17. Bouncing right back, he birdied No. 18 and shot his final nine holes at even-par to close the day. Swavely's day saw a 2-over back nine to begin, featuring three bogeys and one birdie, and an even-par front nine.

In a tie for 64th is junior Harrison Arnold at 4-over par (76). Arnold was consistent all day long, with 2-over performances on both the front and back nines with two bogeys each. Ben Warian finishes the Minnesota competitors in 78th (81). After struggling to start and entering the turn at 8-over, Warian produced a 1-over front nine to close strong. His day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 hole two.

Competing as an individual, Harry Plowman-Ollington shot a 5-over 77. The senior registered five bogeys, two birdies and one double bogey in his first round.
