Samedy led the way with 22 kills and 21 digs

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 12 University of Minnesota volleyball team took down the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in four sets, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 on Sunday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion.

"I can't stress the importance of today's win," said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "Not only relative to who we hope to be at the end of the year, but relative to Friday as well. There's going to be tough nights in this league but it was great to see our team respond the way it did."

The Golden Gophers (12-6, 7-3 Big Ten) were paced by redshirt senior opposite Stephanie Samedy, who tallied 22 kills and 21 digs. Airi Miyabe totaled 16 kills while CC McGraw led the way on defense with 24 digs.

As a team, Minnesota hit .240 with 60 kills, four aces, 81 digs and nine blocks. Ohio State (16-4, 6-4 Big Ten) hit .198 with 57 kills, two aces, 81 digs and eight blocks. Gabby Gonzalez led the Buckeyes with 19 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Set one was incredibly evenly matched as the Gophers took a 15-14 lead into the first media timeout. Halfway through the set there were 10 ties and six lead changes and no team led by more than two points. Samedy led the Gophers at the halfway mark with five kills on an efficient eight swings while Miyabe had three kills. After the timeout, however, OSU scored the next four points to go up 18-15 and force a timeout from coach McCutcheon. Minnesota would rally, going on a 4-1 run of their own after the timeout to go up 19-18. OSU stormed back, finishing the set on a 7-3 run to take set one, 25-22. The 'U' hit .175 in the first set and Samedy and Miyabe led the way with seven and five kills, respectively. Ohio State hit .209 and had five different players register multiple kills.

Set 2: The two teams split the first 12 points of the set with no one leading by more than one. The Gophers accelerated in the middle of the set, however, going on a 10-5 run to take a 16-11 lead heading into the media timeout. A trio of kills from Wenaas, a pair from Miyabe and a kill and a solo block from Katie Myers proved to be key in the burst from the home team. OSU would respond again after the timeout, scoring five of the next six points to cut the home team's lead to 17-16, forcing a timeout from coach McCutcheon. Minnesota would extend its lead to 21-18 after a solo block from Rubright and a kill from Miyabe before OSU cut it back to one at 21-20. A service error followed by an attacking error from the visitors put the Gophers up 23-20 and forced the Buckeyes into calling a timeout. The Gophers would close out the set, 25-21, on kills from Samedy and Wenaas. Minnesota hit .256 and held OSU to .140 for the set. Samedy had five kills while Miyabe and Wenaas had four each.

Set 3: Minnesota picked up where it left off in set two, scoring the first six points of set three. Three kills from Miyabe, a solo block from Rubright and an ace from Myers forced a Buckeyes timeout. OSU would respond by scoring 11 of the next 16 points, cutting the Gophers lead to one at 12-11 and forcing a timeout. The visitors completed a 5-0 run after the timeout to take their first lead of the set at 13-12. The 'U' showed some mid-set resiliency, however, going on a 5-1 run to go up 17-14. An ace by Rachel Kilkelly and kills from Miyabe and Wenaas sparked the spurt. OSU would cut the lead to one again at 18-17 and 21-20, but each time the Gophers went on 2-0 runs to extend the lead back to three. The second time the visitors called a timeout as the home team closed in on set three. Kills from Miyabe and Samedy helped the 'U' close out set three, 25-21. Minnesota hit .333 compared to .325 for OSU while Miyabe led the Gophers with six kills.

Set 4: Ohio State and Minnesota split the first 14 points of the set before a 3-1 Gophers run put the home team up 10-8. OSU responded with a 7-2 run to go up 15-12 heading into the media timeout. An attacking error by the 'U' gave OSU its biggest lead of the set at 16-12. Four consecutive errors by the visitors helped Minnesota tie it back up at 16-16. OSU retook the lead at 17-16 before two Samedy kills sparked a 3-0 Gophers run and led to a Buckeyes timeout. Minnesota continued its run after the timeout, scoring four of the next six to go up 23-19 and force OSU's final timeout. A kill from Myers pushed the Gophers to a set point 24-19 and Miyabe sealed the 25-21 win for Minnesota with a kill of her own.
