MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's golf team completed the first round of the Olde Stone Intercollegiate, then play was suspended in the second round due to darkness on Monday. As a team, the Gophers are tied for tenth at 23-over par after shooting a 311 opening round.Ā

"Today's conditions were brutal," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "It's not an excuse as we didn't execute as well as we should have, but as the scores show it was very difficult. It was a day where we needed to grind over every shot and mental lapses cost us in the end. We still have the opportunity to post a number tomorrow and finish our second round well."

Joanne Free led the Gophers in individual standings and finished the first round tied for 12th at 2-over (74). The fifth year senior recorded three birdies on the day on No. 3, 11 and 12. Following Free was Emma Carpenter after shooting a 6-over 78.Ā

One stroke behind in a tie for 47th is Grace Curran (79) and Geraldine Wong tied for 50th at 8-over (80). Junior Leah Herzog carded a 12-over 84 to tie for 70th.Ā

The tournament resumes Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. CT, with the remainder of the second round and then the teams will continue on to the third round.
