New Prague, Minn., native Les Bolstad has long been considered the father of golf in Minnesota. At just age 18, Bolstad became the youngest winner ever of a U.S. Public Links title, when he did so in 1926. As a golfer at the University of Minnesota, Bolstad also won two Big Ten titles in 1927 and 1929. Bolstad would go on to win Minnesota Public Links, State Amateur and State Open titles during his illustrious playing career.
Bolstad served as the University of Minnesota's golf coach from 1947-76 as well, and mentored many of the state's most successful golfers, including the legendary Patty Berg. Bolstad, long considered one of the best teachers in amateur golf history, was later inducted into the Collegiate Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Bolstad is a member of 'M' Club Hall of Fame and the University named its golf course after Bolstad in 1983.
During his more than 30 years at the university and in the years since, Bolstad's efforts touched almost all those involved in Minnesota golf.
