Gophers Defeat Beavers 5-2

Minnesota peppered Bemidji State, scoring five goals on 57 shots to pick up program win No. 699.

Bemidji, Minn. -- The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team used a dominant first period to surge past Bemidji State by a score of 5-2 in game one of this weekend's series at the Sanford Center on Friday afternoon.

Minnesota (6-3-0) scored three goals and outshot Bemidji State (2-4-1) 25-4 in the opening frame to set the tone for a game one victory. Amy Potomak opened the scoring for the Maroon and Gold with the first two goals in the game. It was her third game this season with multiple goals. Audrey Wethington, Abigail Boreen, and Ella Huber scored the following three tallies. Taylor Heise put on a passing clinic making two beautiful feeds to set up the Gophers' third and fourth goals. The Gophers outshot the Beavers 57-23 in Friday's contest.

Skylar Vetter earned her first career victory after stopping 21 of 23 shots. BSU's Hannah Hogenson kept the score tighter than it could've been as she made 52 saves in the losing effort.

Quotable
"A solid win here tonight against a team in Bemidji that makes it really hard," said head coach Brad Frost. "They play hard on the puck, win those battles, and keep it to the outside. A good job by our team to get a few in the first and to continue to battle and increase the lead. Overall, a really solid effort from our group. We're looking forward to tomorrow."

Notable
Freshman Skylar Vetter earned her first career victory. Taylor Heise extended her point streak to seven games with two assists, while Amy Potomak tallied her third multi-goal game this season. Friday's victory became the 699th in program history.
