Gophers Earn Tough Overtime Road Win Over Arizona State

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota (1-1, 0-0 B1G) bounced back with a overtime road win over Arizona State (1-1, 0-0 PAC-12) by a score of 66-59 on Friday night at Desert Financial Arena. Jasmine Powell scored 21 points, including seven in overtime, to lead the Gophers to their first victory of the 2021-22 season.
Overall Powell finished 9-of-22, but shot 9-of17 in the second half and overtime. Powell was a factor on the boards for the Golden Gophers, she collected nine rebounds and added five assists. Also getting into double figures was Kadi Sissoko who scored 14 points in the victory and shot 6-of-11 from the floor and came down with six rebounds. Sara Scalia rounded out Minnesota's double figure scorers as the junior scored 13 points, extending her double figures scoring streak to 15 games dating back to last season.
The victory moves Lindsay Whalen to 4-0 in overtime games in her coaching career and pushes her impressive non-conference regular season record to 23-3 since she took over as head coach.
Other notables included Edina, Minn., native Bailey Helgren scoring her first bucket as a Golden Gopher. The graduate transfer played nearly 30 minutes and was a major factor on the boards collecting eight rebounds which included four on the offensive end. In total Minnesota won the rebound battle with 53 in total, including 19 on the offensive glass. Minnesota's 53 rebounds are the second most under head coach Lindsay Whalen, just missing the mark of 54 the team had against Air Force back on Dec. 2, 2018.
The 51st season of Golden Gopher women's basketball continues on Nov. 14, when the team returns to Williams Arena for a matchup with George Washington.
