MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's Jack LaFontaine has been named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week after leading the No. 5 Gopher men's hockey program to a Big Ten series sweep over Notre Dame last weekend.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, LaFontaine backstopped the Maroon & Gold to a pair of wins over the Irish at 3M Arena at Mariucci and an early lead in the 2021-22 Big Ten standings.
The 2021 Mike Richter Award winner, who also earned First Team All-America and Big Ten Goaltender of the Year honors, stopped 54 of the 57 shots he faced over the weekend (.947 save percentage) and also helped Minnesota go 6-for-6 on the penalty kill in the series. LaFontaine made 28 saves on 29 shots in Friday's 4-1 win over the Irish before following up with 26 saves in Saturday's 3-2 victory for the 'U'. LaFontaine and the Gophers have now won four-straight games over Notre Dame while outscoring the Big Ten rival 13-3 over that stretch.
