Minnesota's 11 game win streak was snapped for its first non-conference loss in over four years.
Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team fell to Colgate by a score of 2-1 in the Smashville Showcase championship on Saturday evening at the Ford Ice Center.
Minnesota (12-4-0) suffered their first loss since early October after Colgate (15-4-1) held on to a 2-1 victory. The Gophers struck first behind a power play goal from Madeline Wethington in the second period. Colgate responded with two second period tallies from top-line sophomore Kalty Kaltounkova. Both teams struck on the power play on a combined 16 penalties. The Gophers outshot the Raiders 29-24 in Saturday's contest.
Freshman Skylar Vetter stopped 22 of 24 shots in her first full non-conference game. Opposing freshman netminder Hannah Murphy made 28 saves to earn the victory.
Quotable
"Not the result we wanted tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "Penalties all night, no flow. We need to be a little bit better, so looking forward to a great series next weekend at Wisconsin."
Notable
Minnesota's winning streak came to an end at 11 games. It was the first non-conference loss for the Gophers since 2017-18 and first loss to Colgate in program history. Taylor Heise's point streak came to an end after 13 games.
