MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota swimmer Hannah Cornish has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.

Cornish won all six of her non-exhibition races last weekend as the Minnesota women's swimming and diving team defeated Nebraska and St. Thomas.

Friday against the Huskers, Cornish won the 100 and 200 free events, posting personal records of 50.56 and 1:49.81, respectively. Both were also the fastest by a Gopher this year. She added a win as the leadoff in the 400 free relay (3:23.78), while she swam the 100 fly in an exhibition and posted the third-best time at 56.81.

Saturday, she won all three races she entered. Individually, she touched first in the 50 free with a personal-best 23.34, which was also the second-fastest this year on the team. She also served as the No. 3 swimmer in the 200 free relay (1:33.08) and 200 medley relay (1:42.41), helping her team to wins in both races.

Cornish is the first Gopher woman to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Abbey Kilgallon took home the honor on Oct. 24, 2018. Cornish's honor is also the second for the swimming and diving program as a whole this year as Jake Butler was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Oct. 20.

Minnesota returns to the pool this Friday for its annual Pack the Pool event against Wisconsin at 4 p.m. at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Admission is free and masks are required. After the dual, Olympic Gold Medalist and Minnesota volunteer assistant coach Bowe Becker will be signing autographs.
