Women's Basketball Opens 2021-22 Season with Jacksonville at Home

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota (0-0, 0-0 B1G) opens its 51st season of play with a matchup with Jacksonville University (0-0, 0-0 ASUN) on Tuesday afternoon at 12 p.m. at Williams Arena. The game will be available to stream online on B1G+ and can be heard on the home of Minnesota women's basketball, KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist.

ABOUT THIS GAME
- The Gophers are under the tutelage of head coach Lindsay Whalen who enters her fourth season as the head coach.
- The Maroon and Gold have won 11 of their last 12 season openers and are 16-1 in the last 17 openers at home. Last season the Golden Gophers won their season opener over Eastern Illinois at Williams Arena. Head Coach Lindsay Whalen is 2-1 in her career in season openers (all at home).
- Jacksonville has lost two straight season openers with their last win coming in 2018 over Webber International.
- Minnesota's matchup with Jacksonville University is the first between the two teams.
GOPHER NOTABLES
- Last season Jasmine Powell was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the league's coaches and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the media covering the conference. Meanwhile, Sara Scalia was chosen Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. In addition, redshirt senior Gadiva Hubbard was tabbed as the school's Sportsmanship Award representative.
- This season Minnesota returns 12 letterwinners from last year's squad including all five starters from the last game of the season. The Golden Gophers return all 105 starts from last year's team and only lose one student-athlete from last year's roster. Jasmine Powell (14.5 PPG, 4.6 APG), Sara Scalia (14.5 PPG) and Kadi Sissoko (12.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG) all return and will help Minnesota be one of the most dangerous offenses in the Big Ten this season.
- Minnesota faces one of the toughest schedules in the country with up to 13 NCAA Tournament teams from last season on the schedule and Minnesota's opponent win percentage (.582 in 2020-21) is the highest among any other schedule in the Big Ten.
- Gadvia Hubbard was Minnesota's leading scorer during the team's exhibition victory over Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 31, with 17 points and five 3-pointers. She was one of three Gophers in double figures in the game with Kadi Sissoko (13) and Sara Scalia (13) joining Hubbard. Sissoko and Hubbard did a majority of their work in the first half with 11 points each while all of junior guard Jasmine Powell's nine points came in the first half.
- Minnesota welcomes two freshmen along with a pair of graduate transfers to this year's roster in Alanna Micheaux, Maggie Czinano, Deja Winters and Bailey Helgren.
- University of Minnesota head women's basketball coach Lindsay Whalen announced on Nov. 1, that sophomore guard Katie Borowicz (Roseau, Minn.) will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery today to repair a non-athletic related injury.
