MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sixth-year senior Sarah Bacon earned a first-place finish and a runner-up spot at the U.S. Diving Winter Nationals this past weekend in Bloomington, Ind.

Bacon's week began Thursday on the 1-meter springboard. She posted a score of 283.55 through prelims, putting her in first place entering the finals nearly 13 points ahead of the competition.

In the finals later that night, Bacon recorded a score of 282.70 after her five dives, giving her a total score of 566.25. She distanced herself from the field in the finals, winning by more than 26 points and clearing third place by over 47 points.

Bacon was back in action Friday, this time on the 3-meter springboard. She was third through the prelims with a score of 305.25, 1.3 points back of second place and 35.7 points behind the prelim leader.

In the 3-meter finals, Bacon posted an even better score with a 344.50 Friday afternoon. Her total of 649.75 was good enough to move into second place and finishing just 7.0 points behind first-place finisher Hailey Hernandez from the University of Texas.

With her 1-meter championship and 3-meter runner-up finish, Bacon has now qualified in both events for the FINA World Championships, scheduled to take place next May 13-29 in Fukuoka, Japan.
